Free Radicals Cause Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage

Oxidation takes place all around us and it occurs in our bodies too. Millions of chemical reactions involving oxidation take place in our bodies every second. The imbalance of free radicals causes oxidative stress, and oxidative stress can cause DNA and protein damage. Dietary antioxidants are able to protect our DNA from this damage.

Some free radicals and oxidative stress facts: Free radicals are unstable molecules that often contain oxygen. Free radicals are unstable because they have only one electron and they desperately want two to make them stable. To get another electron they rob one from anything they can. All healthy cells in our bodies are a good source for these electrons. The free radicals in our bodies quickly and relentlessly cause a lot of damage. Our DNA receives about 10,000 "hits" from free radicals per cell per day (Ames, 1993).

An imbalance of free radicals in the body is called oxidative stress. Our cells can cope with small amounts of oxidative stress as they are quite ingenious and can repair minor free radical damage. However not all damage can be repaired and the unrepaired damage accumulates in the body.

Major oxidative stress can cause grave disturbances in cell metabolism and contribute to human disease. Tissue damage and injury can lead to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can cause DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, protein damage and ischaemic (lack of oxygen) injury.

Our body constantly produces free radicals and other oxygen derived molecules (such as hydrogen peroxide). Our body has a relatively small reserve of antioxidant defense capacity. We continuously subject themselves to many substances and activities that increase the level of free radicals in their bodies, so the body can easily become overpopulated with oxygen-derived species that upset cell biochemistry.

Some sources of free radicals include; metabolism by-products, macrophages and neutrophils, UV radiation, pollution, fatty foods, chemicals, cigarette smoke and exercise.

Ingredient Summary

Grape Seed Extract Contains rich sources of flavonoids (compounds found in plants) called Proanthocyanidins or OPCs that are powerful anti-oxidants, protecting blood vessels from damage.

Alpha Lipoic Acid A vitamin-like substance and a potent anti-oxidant that enhances the effect of other anti-oxidants. It helps maintain levels of Glutathione, an important anti-oxidant. It regenerates damaged nerves. It is a neurological antioxidant that chelates free iron. It improves mitochondrial function (mitochondria are the energy-producing units of cells).

Lipoic Acid Complex (R Lipoic, Alpha Lipoic) A vitamin-like substance and a potent anti-oxidant that enhances the effect of other anti-oxidants. It helps maintain levels of Glutathione, an important anti-oxidant. It regenerates damaged nerves. It is a neurological antioxidant that chelates free iron. It improves mitochondrial function (mitochondria are the energy-producing units of cells).

Lycopene The antioxidant lycopene is an open-chain unsaturated carotenoid found primarily in tomatos and other plants that imparts the red color.

Vitamin C (Ascorbate) Vitamin C as an ascorbate is an essential nutrient required for metabolic reactions. Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant, an ascorbate peroxidase substrate, an enzyme cofactor for the biosynthesis of many biochemicals and an electron donor for enzymes. The active form of vitamin C is the ascorbate ion, a strong reducing agent that gets converted to its oxidized form, L-dehydroascorbate in the body by enzymes and glutathione. It is a weak sugar acid structurally related to glucose, which naturally occurs either attached to a hydrogen ion (ascorbic acid), or to a mineral ion (a mineral ascorbate). The biological halflife for vitamin C is about 30 minutes in blood plasma.

Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract (Ginkgo biloba) Ginkgo biloba one of the oldest living tree species works with two groups of active substances; the terpene lactones and the flavonoids including ginkgolides A, B, and C, bilobalide, quercetin and kaempferol.

Turmeric Root Extract (Curcuma longa) The deep yellow ground up dried root of the herb turmeric member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae used in curries contains the active ingredient is is the polyphenol curcumin.

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) Cysteine is a conditionally essential sulfur bearing amino acid, derived by the combination of methionine and pyridoxal 5 phosphate (vitamin B6). N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of L-cysteine wherein an acetyl group is attached to the nitrogen atom, and the precursor form to glutathione.

R Alpha Lipoic Acid A vitamin-like substance and a potent anti-oxidant that enhances the effect of other anti-oxidants. It helps maintain levels of Glutathione, an important anti-oxidant. It regenerates damaged nerves. It is a neurological antioxidant that chelates free iron. It improves mitochondrial function (mitochondria are the energy-producing units of cells).

Olive Leaf Extract (18.0% oleuropein) Olive Leaf Extract comes from the olive tree, a member of the evergreen family native to the Mediterranean region but grown around the world. The therapeutic benefits of olive leaf extract lie in the active ingredient oleuropein.

Grape Skin Extract Grape Skin extract a Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol derived from grapes, mulberries and peanuts that show a decrease in the activity of cytokines.

Zinc (Monomethionine) The second most ocurring essential nutrient is zinc. Zinc is involved in about 3000 different protein complexes in the body.

CoenzymeQ10 Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone or CoQ10) is vitamin-like substance, an important antioxidant in both mitochondria and lipid membranes in all cells, and responsible for the production of the body’s own energy. In each cell food energy is converted into energy for our body in the mitochondria with the aid of CoQ10. Almost all our body’s energy requirements (ATP) is converted with the aid of CoQ10.

Copper (Glycinate Chelate) Copper is an essential nutrient found primarily in the bloodstream, as a co-factor in various enzymes, and in copper-based body pigments. Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the digestive tract so a dietary 10:1 balance must be maintained to prevent a deficiency.

Selenium (L-Selenomethioine) Selenium is an essential trace element which functions as cofactor for reduction of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductase, and plays a role in cellular apoptosis.
