Children’s Cold Medicine Warnings . . . What’s a Parent to Do?Most of us read in the news that the FDA issued a statement saying that "questions have been raised about the safety of [children’s cold medicines] and whether the benefits justify any potential risks from the use of these products in children, especially in children under 2 years of age." Regarding the supposed “benefits” – if any – it’s important to keep in mind that both colds and flu are caused by viruses, and no antibiotics or cold medicines have any effect against a virus. In other words, except for the possibility of some slight symptom relief, cold medicines do not help children get well. Some recommendations surrounding the cold medicine controversy advised avoiding using medications for children under two or under five, but last year a group of pediatricians and public health officials asked the FDA to have drug companies from marketing cold remedies to children under six. In October of last year, many drugs were actually withdrawn from the market in response to the FDAs position that the drugs hadn’t been proven to work and had serious risks for young children. See http://www.chpa-info.org/ChpaPortal/PressRoom/NewsReleases/2007/10_11_07_CCMedicines.htm for a complete list of those drugs. So what’s a parent to do when their little one is sick?
